BMW X5 Series Overview
The new BMW X5 is an attractive, and best selling, mid size, luxurious SUV vehicle which has set its own standard for handling and performance. This model is just as sporty as its predecessors, and remains very attractive for all those who wish the ‘S’ in the SUV to actually mean something. Along with sharp and confident handling this model can comfortably seat 5 passengers.
The 2009 X5 model has some revised features and a new diesel model, the X5 xDrive35d.
BMW X5 Series Body Style
The BMW X5 looks like another crossover and does not have anything new to offer in terms of body style. The second generation X5 series is longer and wider with larger windows and large outside mirrors. The exterior sheet metal mimics other designs of BMW. We found the flanks seem less chiseled and the creases were mostly hewn. This mid size luxury car is available in two trim levels 3.0siand 4.8i. The trims refer to engine size, and there are no significant exterior styling differences between the two. The interiors are exquisite with a dash that is gently curved, with handsome wood inlays, generously sized air vents and a gorgeous soft feeling top that merges with the whole design. We found the X5’s cabin sleek and purposeful with a perfect combination of luxury and vigor.
BMW X5 Series Features
The 2009 BMW X5 has a plethora of standard features. They have many optional features also like the high tech gadgetry. The various features added in the new model are remote operating one-touch power windows, dual-zone automatic climate control and AM/FM/CD/MP3 12-speaker audio with auxiliary input.
The X5 model also includes standard features such as six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission, xDrive full-time all-wheel drive, all-season run-flat tires on 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon adaptive auto-leveling headlamps with automatic control, and]panoramic sunroof.
An automatic tailgate is added to the Premium Package; to the Cold Weather Package come heated rear seats. The 4.8i model includes premium sound package which includes an ipod/USB adapter, it also includes a choice of leather and wood trimsThe premium model is loaded with additional features such as leather upholstery (3.0si), power lumbar support and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, six C D changer. In the 2009 premium model you can also opt for a rear-seat entertainment center with an eight-inch screen. Like the standard model the premium model also offers additional features which are optional such as front and rear parking sensors, Comfort Access keyless entry and ignition, a head-up display and a panoramic moon roof that’s made of two large glass panels and includes a power sunshade. Overall the X5 has plethora of options and features which can fulfill every demand, however the idrive interface could be a little troublesome.
BMW X5 Series Performance
The BMW X5 are available in three engines options. The diesel powered engine seemed very impressive with its sporty look and reasonable fuel economy for its class. The X5 xDrive30i is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 260 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. It’s EPA, fuel economy estimates are 14 city/19 highway and 16 combined. During the performance test the X5 4.8i went from zero to 60 mph in 7 seconds whereas the 3.0-liter engine went 0-60 in 7.8 seconds and the 4.8-liter went in 6.4 seconds. The 3.0si would be enough for most buyers and the V-8 would be a bit over the top. As for towing it was seen that both inline-six and V-8 versions were rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds when properly equipped.
We found that BMW X5 features the exclusive Valvetronic electronic valve actuation and Double VANOS variable valve timing, which contribute to better-than-expected fuel efficiency for such performance-oriented vehicles. As a result the driver can enjoy the comfortable drive without worrying about the gas as the powertrain is busy eking the most out of every drop of gas.
As for automatics, the X5 has the best of them. We found the shift quality is excellent and the transmission kicks down when necessary. When the car is in sport mode, the kick-down is still quick and the engine braking is quite decent. We were not very impressed by the X5 when we drove them on twisty mountain roads. It does handle as smoothly as other larger crossover usually does.
However X5 has both the power and the handling to make you think sport, not utility and is one of the best mid size luxury SUV car. We found the car to always be stable and under control with responsive steering, powerful engines, and a taut chassis. The automatic shifts with authority, but is smooth at cruising speeds and in Sport model alike. Overall the performances can be rated as outstanding due to its good handling and the powerful nature of the engine.
The BMW X5 is very elegant and has been designed with the perfect quality of materials and its roomy seating adds a feather to its cap. The interiors are quite comfortable and spacious but we found the third row seat not very comfortable. The folding third row seat is best suited for children. This model offers a storage bin in each of the rear door which makes plenty of space for stowing, as to not impede on the cabin space in use. Similarly the storage bins in both the front doors allows an individual to place more than just the owner’s manual inside. The cargo floor also has four extra inches of length in comparison to the older models.
The only drawback that we could point out was the flimsy plastic that was used in the panels covering the opening of the ski bag and the tailgate’s hinged panel. The 2009 BMW X5 is very quite except for some engine noise and coarse-surface tire thrum. Overall the 2009 is quite comfortable except for the third row with richly appointed interiors.
The BMW X5 antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, brake drying and standby features, a rollover sensor, front side airbags , side curtain airbags for the first and second rows and the discs clean during inclement weather. During the safety test it scored it a complete five for frontal-impact driver protection and four stars for frontal-impact passenger protection. There are many standard and optional features that can be added as per our choice.
We can easily conclude that 2009 BMW X5 is better handling luxury car with powerful engines, luxurious and comfortable interiors, excellent ipod interface and plenty of features.
The main drawbacks are the third row seats not very comfortable, expensively priced, and frustrating idrive interface.
