Lexus GS 450H Overview
The hybrid powertrain 2009 Lexus GS 450H priced at $56550 is a mid size luxury sport sedan. This sport sedan is ideal for buyers who want performance without much of sacrifice in fuel economy. This model delivers the performance of a V8-powered sport sedan while sipping fuel like a midsize V6 family cruiser. It offers satisfying performance keeping the environment in mind, but it turns to be heavy on the wallet. Lexus GS 450 H is squeaky clean, as it also achieves Super-Low-Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) status.
The Lexus GS 450H is a hybrid car but it shares its look like any other gasoline powered versions. The badge on the trunk helps to differentiate between the gasoline version and the hybrid car. The Lexus is known to be the best looking sedan as it brings a legitimate sense of design passion to its sleekly flowing sheet metal which makes it arguably the best. Its interiors are also designed in a similar pattern to the other models which are made of genuine wood and aluminum trim which also complements the rich leather seating surfaces, and they are all put together with flawless fit and finish. The trunk space in the GS 450H model is tighter than other GS models at only 11 cubic feet, owing to the placement of the hybrid battery pack.
The Lexus GS 450H would satisfy the appetite of any car enthusiast who loves power assists and high tech features. This hybrid model comes with a wide amalgamation of standard and premium features. They include 18-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, adaptive xenon headlights and a sunroof. There are many other features also which are included in the standard model are leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats with driver memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, wood interior trim, Bluetooth, a back-up camera, keyless ignition/entry and a 10-speaker audio system with CD changer.
Those who wish to add high tech features to their venerated possession can optionally choose from navigation system, satellite radio, a phenomenal 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, and a safety-oriented pre-collision feature with adaptive cruise control, active antiroll bars and a rear spoiler.
Lexus provides conventional summer tires which we found them to be very standard; however Lexus offers options to buyers for buying summer or all season run flat tires. We found the inner space inside the cabin relatively limited. It would be difficult for tall drivers to find comfort in this car.
The 2009 Lexus GS 450H has an impressive performance like the V8 but it fails to match the fuel economy. This model is equipped with liter V6 engine and separate high-output electric motor which combines to generate up to 340 hp. Like any other hybrid vehicle the GS can start off and drive at low speeds under electric power and then engage the V6 automatically when more motivation is required. We found that the gasoline and electric propulsion units worked like a single entity and produced more than 300 horsepower which gets the hybrid moving to 60 mph in less than six seconds which makes it almost similar to the V8. We also noted that the brakes had great controls and the vehicle stops quickly with reassuring authority.
The 2009 Lexus model is very appealing to all those who wish to go eco friendly as we found them to less polluting. The EPA fuel economy was found to be average at 22 mpg on city roads and 25mpg on highways and 23 mpg combined.
The brand itself is known for good quality. We found the Lexus a little expensive hybrid car mainly due to the cramped trunk and rear seat. We expected a little more space in trunk area like it is available in other luxury car. The noise levels were also high and not expected in a luxury car available at a premium range. Despite the noisy shortcomings, this luxury model retains the upscale interior materials. The inner cabin is luxurious and well crafted which offers a pleasure while traveling. The seats are also beautifully crafted to perfection and very comfortable.
The main drawback that we could note was that the storage was very limited. The space has been a constraint due to the battery placement. In addition we found the bulky rear wheel arches intrude and small opening makes for awkward loading. We also felt that this model is not very comfortable for those whoa re very tall as even though it provides ample leg space but it has only average head clearance which would make the tall passengers feel cramped. Though the seats are comfortable they can accommodate only four passengers with comfort as the elevated rear center cushion makes for a tighter fit in the middle position.
We found that Lexus 2009 provides superior levels of safety for its occupants. They offer standard features like antilock brakes (with brake assist), traction control, stability control and a total of 10 airbags. There are many optional features that are available like the Lexus pre collision system which uses radar sensor to detect objects in front of the car, plus a computer that tracks vehicle speed, yaw rate and steering angle. If the computer determines that a collision is imminent, it immediately activates the seatbelt pre-tensioners and engages full power braking when the brake pedal is depressed. During the safety test Lexus GS 450H scored the top rating of “Good” in both frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
We can easily conclude that Lexus GS 450H is a high performance mid size sport sedan car. The main highlights are brisk performance, eco friendly and high and tech features, outstanding fit and finish.
We found the main drawbacks were they have a small trunk, and fuel economy was at sub par. The back seat space is also limited and can comfortably seat only four passengers unlike other luxury cars which can seat five passengers with comfort.
