2010 Geneva Motor Show may witness the BMW active Hybrid 5 concept



BMW is all set to adorn the 2011 5 Series  sedan at the showroom windows  this June but reports claim that BMW has plans to unveil the  gasoline hybrid edition at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show  to be held in March 2010. So all auto enthusiast can first take a glimpse of the hybrid edition before 2011 5 series sedan is launched.

Reports claim that BMW will also be unveiling a concept version of the Active Hybrid 5 at the upcoming Geneva event which will go on sales next year.

It is estimated that the Active Hybrid 5 will feature a similar mild hybrid system found in the current Active Hybrid 7.  It will be powered by a 4.4 liter V8 engine which will be teamed to a 3 phase synchronous electric motor. This configuration will be coupled with the torque converter of an 8 speed automatic transmission and directly connected to the crankshaft. This configuration will assist the electric motor to aid acceleration during high loads. It also acts as a generator by recapturing brake energy.

It is expected that Active Hybrid 5 will offer an output similar to the Active hybrid 7 and will generate 455 horsepower and 516 pounds feet of torque. This configuration will accelerate the vehicle from zero to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. It is expected that they would offer a 15 % improved fuel economy like the 750i.

BMW has not yet confirmed whether the hybrid version of 5 series will be available in the US market but given the popularity of this edition BMW may change its plans and decide to extend it to the American segment also.

All auto fans from the country do not be disheartened as there are chances that BMW may update their sales plans.

    I wonder why people always kills the fun of driving the cars! Hybrid cars are very good for the environment and stuff but it kills the performance.

    Exactly, People buy these kind of cars for its performance and if everyone will start making hybrids then people might kill their interest in buying as well.

    I completely support hybrids. Who said hybrids cannot perform. The engineers and company are well aware of the consequences if they will not satisfy their customers.
