Volkswagen had confirmed last year that it would start selling the Polo in the year 2011 in the US. This five door hatchback model was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show held earlier this year.
There were questions that were raised as to how much the US bound Polo would be altered from its German counterpart.
A VW spokesman confirmed that the car would not have any major difference to the original version except the place of production would be changed. The company plans to assemble this edition in the Mexican Plant to keep the cost at the lower end.
It is rumored that the US version will have option of only one or two gasoline engines while in Europe the Polo offers a choice of three gasoline and three diesel engines from 1.2 to 1.4 liters. After achieving success on their Jetta TDI it is estimated that the US polo edition would be built on similar lines.
The VW Polo version has already achieved a top five-star overall result in tougher new European crash tests. It is a relatively safe subcompact car with all the basic safety features such as airbags, seat belts, electronic stability control and front-seat head restraints that reduce whiplash. This new car has already gained fame as “the safest car in the world.”
During the crash test this car scored a tie with 2010 Honda Insight but moved ahead in the child protection category and won this acclaimed title.
With the redesigning of the Polo for the US the size and weight have grown heavier. It is expected that the 2011 VW Polo would be about the same size as the VW Rabbit which was seen in the market during 1975 to 1984.
VW is known to the highest selling cars of Europe. It has its assembly plants in China and South America. It has tough competition from automakers like Toyota and General Motors.
To keep themselves ahead in the race VW has laid down new business tactics and have decided to open a $1 billion assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, its first in the US since the Pennsylvania factory that built the first Rabbit (Golf) model from 1978 to 1984. This plant would produce a new mid size sedan which would be designed exclusively keeping in mind the requirement from the US market.
There is no official information about this mid size sedan but it will be designed to offer tough competition to Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Malibu.
We have to wait and watch for more details about the new venture that VW may enter into.
