The Land Rover Defender is well known as an automotive icon. It has been in the market for more than a decade but has kept up its name and fame consistently. The classic Defender which can be used on most terrains is finally due for an update. There were earlier reports that the revamp project is on its way. There are recent reports which confirm that the next gen edition would be launched in 2013.
Though there is sufficient time for the engineers before they launch the next gen edition, they are secretly working hard on the project. The classic boxy vehicle will be updated with modern design while keeping intact its simplicity and efficient capability. There are reports from Autocar that the new project is expected to abstain from aluminium and use dependable and rugged steel chassis which will be borrowed from the soon to be replaced Discovery and Range Rover Sports model.
The new Defender will be upgraded to the T5 chassis which would mean better independent suspensions. It would offer a choice of hard or soft tops and steel or air springs depending upon its applications. The company proposes to continue with its existing line up of four and six cylinder diesel engines.
The company has plans to produce this truck in myriad forms to suit the mission. The original version was initially built in England. The company now plans to send it to India, China or Russia for its final assembly.
The company does not have recent plans to introduce the new next gen Defender in the US. All Americans will have to wait in resentment till they finalize and disclose finer details.
