Mazda Next Gen Rotary Still A Concept

Mazda has launched the Sky range with traditional engine which has put many car enthusiasts into an apprehension whether the company would discontinue with their RX-8 which is the only car with a rotary engine. To put all your worries at ease, we would like to remind you that Mazda had previewed a new rotary design known as the 16X in 2007.

2010 Mazda RX-8 has set its goal of using technologies to improve its average fuel economy of vehicles by 30% by 2015 in comparison to its 2008 levels. However, it is presumed that 16X will not be able to achieve this aggressive goal.

Mazda Chief, Seita  kanai, spoke to the reporters last week and acknowledged the fact that 16X required some more work to be done before it enters production. Seita kanai said “The 16X is ore a profile of a rotary still in the concept stage and it needs more evolution”

It has been conceptualized that the 16X would be equipped with 1.6 liter rotor unit which would be similar to the one found in RX-8. It will feature direct injection technology and light weight aluminum housing which will assist in reducing fuel consumption. It will also feature longer strokes and a 800cc x 2 displacement design. The 16X is known to be more thermal efficient than the 13B engine.

The 16X is still in the concept stage and there is no cue as to when the company plans to start production. So we have to wait till we get more information about the 16X and its commencement of production.
