Porsche 2012 Boxster may consider three cylinder engine

In the past few months spy cameras have caught prototypes of next generation Boxster sports car on a number of occasions. Porsche is already amidst of developing its next gen car which will be available in the showroom late next year as a 2012 edition.

It is expected that Porsche may be planning to introduce a special fuel efficient version of this edition. There are rumors that the company is all set to set up a lightweight, turbocharged four cylinder platform for the 2012 model. However, Hans-Jurgen Wohler, Porsche’s model line director has confirmed to Autocar that there is a possibility that they may introduce a turbo charged three cylinder powerplant.

Porsche plans to install a down sized engine to reduce its fleets emission and to keep up with the tough new government standards that are coming up in the US and Europe.

Hans Jurgen Wohler confirmed that a Boxster with a three cylinder turbocharged engine or a four cylinder engine would produce between 180 and 200 horsepower. Going back to history Porsche started with a 2.5 liter engine which generated 200 horsepower so it is assumed that customers would definitely accept the new powertrain.

There is a possibility that the new Boxster would coincide with the possible rumors of a revived 914 which would target at different market sectors and would be co branded with Porsche and Volkswagen.

If this information turns true than it is presumed that the new Boxster would be equipped with a compact turbocharged mill. We assume that Porsche would offer a six cylinder engine for premium range models.
