Sneak preview: 2010 Saab 9-5

The Saab 9-5 first hit the streets in 1997 and since then there has been no major overhauls. The company had decided to launch the totally redesigned model last year but its release was pushed back due to various internal reasons. It is expected that the waiting period is over now and the company is all set to unveil the new version at the Frankfurt Auto Show that will be held next month.

There were images of this model that were out on the internet a few months ago but now the company has released official details about the sleek profile, design traits, and specs.

The new model will adorn a revised version of GM’s front-wheel-drive Epsilon II platform, which is also shared by Opel for its new Insignia range. The designers have provided a stiffer suspension, an exclusive range of electronic gadgets, and a new steering rack to differentiate Saab as a premium product.

It has been decided by the company that they would offer three fuel options to the consumer to select from viz. petrol, diesel, and E85 bioethanol.

The new model would be equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel with 160 horsepower, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline unit with 220 horsepower and a premium 2.8-liter turbo V6 gasoline engine which would generate 300 horsepower.

They would also include luxury and entertainment features such as an 8 inch color touch screen navigation system with hard disk storage for map data and 5.1 channel audio systems with 10 GB for MP3 music. The passengers seated at the rear end can enjoy their own audio or watch their own DVD.  The folding view screens are installed behind the back of the screen and wireless headphones are provided for listening and viewing without disturbing the neighboring passenger.

It has been rumored that the company will start production by the end of the year at their home plant in Trollhattan.
